A Waste Water Journey

old WW plant

A  NEW  LAKESIDE  WASTE  WATER  TREATMENT  PLANT.

This is in our future and we are beginning the process.

These plants typically take 5 to 7 years to design and construct.

Lakeside's  City Manager, Mayor, and Council are meeting with government representatives  to organize this process.

Lakeside's Engineering firm has vast experience with projects like this .

Lakeside's  existing treatment plant is 40 years old.   The average life according to the DEQ is 25 years.

The existing plant is in a FEMA floodway and floods to some degree every winter.

The City of Lakeside has a partial treatment plant at the South West side of town that does final processing and sludge loading for the WW system.

The North side facility has sufficient land to construct the future treatment plant.

The final filtered water is discharged into Tenmile creek when the creek level is sufficient - most of the winter.

The final filtered water is discharged  at low creek levels with a sprinkler system on the Lakeside Airport and used to help irrigate the grass there.

Things to consider:

Our Waste Water Crew is doing an outstanding job and has a new chief operator/supervisor.

This will be an involved, expensive project.

This will require higher sewer rates for all Lakeside Sewer Customers.

Some of the cost will be covered by grants from various State and Federal Agencies.

Some of the cost will be covered by loans from State and Federal Agencies that will be paid back over years by Lakeside Sewer Users.

There is really no option and no time to delay.

The existing plant is old and in past years has had limited funds allocated for  maintenance.

A great deal of money is being spend just patching up the existing plant.

Around $25000 is spent for flood insurance each year because the old plant is in a flood way.

The existing plant can not be upgraded or rebuilt in the same location -

Government regulations provide only very limited funds for upgrading older plants in flood areas.
